• The pay is noticeably below what similar roles in your area are listing, with no explanation like added training, mentorship, or unusually light caseload
• There's no clear answer to who your supervising SLP is and how often you'll actually meet with them
• Documentation, meeting, or prep time isn't mentioned anywhere in the pay structure, meaning you may be expected to do it unpaid
• For contract or per session roles, there's no written cancellation or no-show policy
• You're being asked to do anything that sounds outside SLPA scope of practice in your state, especially anything framed as "just this once"
• Benefits, if offered, are vague or the offer avoids specifics when you ask directly

Benchmarks to actually use

National averages are a starting point, not the answer. What matters more is pay in your specific city or region, in your specific setting. Check current listings on job boards for your area, ask other SLPAs in local Facebook groups or professional communities what they're seeing, and if you're coming from a staffing agency, compare their offer against direct-hire postings for the same kind of role.

Questions to ask before you sign

• What does a typical week look like, including non-treatment time?
• Who is my supervising SLP, and how often will we meet?
• Is documentation time paid, and is it built into my schedule?
• What happens to my pay if a client cancels or no-shows?
• Is this a W2 or 1099 role, and if 1099, does the rate account for that?
• What benefits, if any, come with this role, and when do they start?
