California's SLPA license comes from the SLPAHDB, and the board is specific about how your paperwork needs to arrive, sealed transcripts and all. One detail that trips people up: you're issued a license, but you legally cannot start working until an approved supervisor is on file with the board.
Step by step
- Complete either an AA/AS from an SLPA program accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, or a bachelor's degree in communication disorders or speech-language pathology.
- Complete 100 hours of supervised fieldwork plus a 1-hour patient confidentiality training course.
- Gather your application materials: the application form, a passport-style photo, official transcripts mailed in an envelope sealed by your school (or sent electronically by the registrar), a copy of your diploma, fingerprints, and a completed Fieldwork Experience Verification Form.
- Mail your complete application package with the $50 fee to the SLPAHDB.
- Line up your supervising SLP and make sure they're filed as your approved supervisor with the board before you start working, you cannot legally perform SLPA duties until this is on file, even with an issued license.
- Renew your license every two years.
